In Their Own Right
Charles Richmond, Duke of Richmond and Gordon, CBE DL, is Chairman of the Goodwood Estate Company Limited, and founder of several of the world’s most renowned motorsport events. He was named a CBE in 2024 for his contributions to heritage, sport, and charity. The 11th Duke of Richmond, he succeeded his father as Chairman of the Goodwood Estate in 1994 after a successful career as an international photographer producing award‑winning campaigns.
A passion for sport has been at the heart of life on the Estate since 1697, with horseracing, motor racing, golf, flying, shooting and cricket all introduced by family members. Today, Goodwood hosts Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, Goodwood Revival and Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, as well as Qatar Goodwood Festival presented by Visit Qatar, popularly known as ‘Glorious Goodwood’.
The 11th Duke created Festival of Speed (1993) and Revival (1998), bringing motor racing back to Goodwood after nearly three decades’ absence. Now, the focus is on ensuring enjoyment of racing well into the future. Festival of Speed showcases alternative fuels and electric vehicles, and in 2024, Goodwood Revival became the world’s first historic motorsport event to run its full race schedule on sustainable fuel.
Dogs have always been at the heart of life on the Estate and, in 2022, Goodwood added to its calendar of events with Goodwoof – a dog event like no other. The “Glastonbury for dogs” (The Times, May 2025) will celebrate its 5th anniversary in 2026.
Alongside its events, Goodwood operates a diverse portfolio of businesses, welcoming over one million visitors each year. Rolls-Royce has also called Goodwood home since 2005, a move the 11th Duke, as a board member, was deeply involved in.
The not-for-profit Goodwood Art Foundation – a new destination for contemporary art in the UK – opened in May 2025 and received the Cultural & Social Contribution award at the 2025 Walpole British Luxury Awards.
