After reading Economics at Cambridge, Hugh began his professional career at Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co (now KPMG), where he trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

He then spent 18 years at Morgan Grenfell and Deutsche Bank, becoming a Managing Director and Head of the European Chemicals Group, advising companies on M&A, IPOs and corporate finance.

In 2004, Hugh moved to leading investment bank Greenhill & Co as a Partner and Managing Director, and became Chair of the chemicals practice advising global chemical companies until his retirement in 2020.

Hugh is a keen sailor and cruises extensively. He was Vice Commodore and then Commodore of Bembridge Sailing Club from 2013 to 2017. As Executive Chair, he oversaw an operational and financial turnaround in the club’s affairs, updated its governance and represented the club externally.
